Modern replacement equipment often sends less heat into the chimney than older appliances. An oversized masonry flue can cool exhaust, weaken draft and create condensation. Liner sizing must account for appliance category, fuel, input, connector rise, chimney height and whether more than one appliance shares the vent.

System options

Furnace Chimney Liners options and specifications

The correct specification depends on the existing chimney, connected appliance, access, fuel, moisture exposure and the conditions documented during inspection.

01

Gas furnace liner

Best forCompatible Category I equipment

Uses an approved aluminum or stainless system sized to the appliance and chimney configuration.

02

Furnace and water-heater common vent

Best forTwo compatible draft-hood or fan-assisted appliances

Requires calculation of total input, connector sizes, offsets and operating combinations.

03

Stainless appliance liner

Best forApplications requiring additional corrosion resistance

Alloy and system selection must remain compatible with the appliance listing and flue conditions.

What to look for

When to consider furnace chimney liners

  • A new furnace is connected to an old masonry flue
  • Moisture or white residue appears around the chimney
  • The connector or base shows corrosion
  • The chimney is much larger than the appliance outlet
What the scope can include

A complete written scope

  1. Appliance model, category and BTU input review
  2. Connector and chimney measurement
  3. Venting-table sizing
  4. Listed liner, fittings and termination

  • A final inspection
  • An additional magnetic sweep
  • Final drone photos when conditions and location allow
  • A complete quality-control review

Exact payment milestones, closeout steps and return visits are stated in the written contract for the selected project.

Service questions

Details worth understanding.

Final specifications depend on the inspected conditions, appliance listing, selected manufacturer and applicable local requirements.

Is the liner sized from the furnace outlet alone?+

No. Height, input, connector configuration, appliance category and any shared appliance all affect sizing.

Does every high-efficiency furnace use a chimney?+

No. Many higher-efficiency appliances use a manufacturer-approved direct vent instead. The appliance installation instructions control the venting method.
