Durable repointing is more than applying mortar over the face of an old joint. Loose material must be removed to a stable depth, dust and debris cleared, and new mortar selected for compatibility with the existing brick. Crown, flashing and saturation problems should be corrected so new joints are not immediately exposed to the same failure.

System options

Chimney Tuckpointing options and specifications

The correct specification depends on the existing chimney, connected appliance, access, fuel, moisture exposure and the conditions documented during inspection.

01

Localized repointing

Best forIsolated open joints on otherwise sound masonry

Targets defined areas while preserving strong existing mortar and brick.

02

Full-elevation repointing

Best forWidespread joint erosion

Reworks a complete face or exposed section for consistent depth, tooling and weather resistance.

03

Repointing with brick replacement

Best forFailed joints plus spalled masonry units

Combines mortar restoration with selective removal of bricks that can no longer perform.

What to look for

When to consider chimney tuckpointing

  • Mortar joints are recessed, loose or missing
  • Water enters through visible joint gaps
  • Previous surface smears are cracking away
  • Brick edges move when nearby mortar is touched
What the scope can include

A complete written scope

  1. Repair-area sounding and layout
  2. Mortar removal to stable material
  3. Compatible mortar placement and tooling
  4. Adjacent brick and water-shedding recommendations
How the work moves

Our service process

  1. Inspect the accessible system and confirm the source of the problem
  2. Document measurements, materials, appliance information and site conditions
  3. Explain repair or replacement options in a clear written scope
  4. Protect the property and complete the selected work to the agreed specification
  5. Perform final checks and provide available completion photos
From selection to final review

A clear project path, with expectations in writing.

01

Inspection & documentation

We inspect accessible conditions, take measurements and document the parts of the system that shape your repair or installation options.

02

System options & written scope

You receive practical material and system choices, a defined scope of work and clear exclusions where hidden conditions may exist.

03

Contract, deposit & scheduling

Once you select your system:

  • We sign a clear, written contract
  • A 30% deposit is collected
  • We schedule your project
04

Installation & progress documentation

We protect the work area, install the approved scope and document important conditions and completed details as the project moves forward.

05

Cleanup & final inspection

We clean the property thoroughly. Most exterior construction sites are approximately 90-99% clean the same day. For qualifying multi-day masonry and exterior projects, our next-day closeout can include:

  • A final inspection
  • An additional magnetic sweep
  • Final drone photos when conditions and location allow
  • A complete quality-control review

Exact payment milestones, closeout steps and return visits are stated in the written contract for the selected project.

Service questions

Details worth understanding.

Final specifications depend on the inspected conditions, appliance listing, selected manufacturer and applicable local requirements.

Are tuckpointing and repointing the same?+

The terms are often used interchangeably in repair estimates. The important issue is removing failed mortar to adequate depth and installing a compatible new joint.

Can the new mortar match exactly?+

Color and tooling are matched as closely as practical, but age, sand, weathering and curing can produce natural variation.
