A wood stove should not simply discharge into an oversized fireplace flue. A properly designed system uses a continuous listed stainless liner, appliance adapter, insulation where required, top support and cap. Fireplace inserts may also require damper-area preparation and a sealed block-off detail.

Service questions

Details worth understanding.

Final specifications depend on the inspected conditions, appliance listing, selected manufacturer and applicable local requirements.

Can a six-inch stove use an eight-inch liner?+

Only when the appliance instructions and applicable requirements permit that configuration. The manufacturer-specified flue size is the starting point.

Is insulation required around the liner?+

It is frequently required by the liner listing or necessary for the intended clearance and thermal performance. The inspected chimney determines the final specification.
