Not every gas fireplace can be converted to wood. Factory-built gas units, decorative appliances and masonry fireplaces with gas logs have very different construction. The first step is identifying the listing and original firebox, then determining whether a compliant wood-burning path exists or a new approved system is required.

System options

Wood-Burning Fireplace Conversion options and specifications

The correct specification depends on the existing chimney, connected appliance, access, fuel, moisture exposure and the conditions documented during inspection.

01

Masonry fireplace restoration

Best forOriginal wood-burning fireplaces currently fitted with gas logs

May include approved gas-line changes, firebox repair, smoke-chamber work, flue evaluation and damper restoration.

02

Wood insert conversion

Best forSuitable masonry fireplaces needing a controlled appliance

Uses a listed insert with a full-height insulated liner and manufacturer-required clearances and hearth protection.

03

Factory-built system replacement

Best forGas-only units not approved for wood

Requires removal and installation of a complete listed wood-burning fireplace and chimney system where the structure allows it.

What to look for

When to consider wood-burning fireplace conversion

  • The existing unit is labeled gas-only
  • The original flue condition is unknown
  • Combustible framing is close to the firebox or vent
  • The gas line and controls have not been professionally evaluated
What the scope can include

A complete written scope

  1. Model, listing and original-system identification
  2. Firebox, flue and clearance evaluation
  3. Conversion options with exclusions clearly stated
  4. Coordination of qualified gas and chimney work
How the work moves

  • A complete quality-control review

Exact payment milestones, closeout steps and return visits are stated in the written contract for the selected project.

Service questions

Details worth understanding.

Final specifications depend on the inspected conditions, appliance listing, selected manufacturer and applicable local requirements.

Can gas logs simply be removed and wood burned?+

Only if the underlying fireplace was originally approved for wood burning and the firebox, flue, damper, gas line and clearances are confirmed suitable.

Can a direct-vent gas fireplace become wood burning?+

A gas-only direct-vent appliance is not converted by changing logs. It generally requires replacement with a complete approved wood-burning system, subject to the structure and local requirements.
