A top-sealing damper combines a chimney-top closure with indoor cable operation. It can improve the seal compared with a warped throat damper and add rain protection, but it must be correctly sized, attached and compatible with the fireplace and flue termination.

System options

Top-Sealing Damper Installation options and specifications

The correct specification depends on the existing chimney, connected appliance, access, fuel, moisture exposure and the conditions documented during inspection.

01

Standard top-sealing damper

Best forSingle-flue masonry fireplaces

Mounts to a compatible clay tile or adapter and uses a stainless cable to open and close from the firebox.

02

Energy-sealing damper

Best forHomes with noticeable air loss

Uses a gasketed top closure designed to reduce uncontrolled air movement when fully closed.

03

Adapter-mounted damper

Best forDamaged, short or unusual flue tiles

Requires a listed mounting solution or repair that creates a secure, weather-shedding base.

What to look for

When to consider top-sealing damper installation

  • The throat damper is rusted, warped or missing
  • Cold air enters through an unused fireplace
  • Rain protection is also needed
  • The existing top damper cable or seal has failed

Service questions

Details worth understanding.

Final specifications depend on the inspected conditions, appliance listing, selected manufacturer and applicable local requirements.

Can the throat damper remain in place?+

Sometimes, depending on its condition and the selected system. It must not obstruct operation or create confusion during fireplace use.

Does a top damper replace every chimney cap?+

It protects its flue opening, but multi-flue crowns or other vent terminations may still need separate protection.
